| Education and Training for Iowa's Workforce to Fill the Gap | | | | October 16, 2018 | | | ) This graph is a slide from Beth Townsend's presentation at the Iowa Ideas Conference last month in Cedar Rapids. It shows how middle-skill jobs in Iowa are lacking workers. Middle skill jobs require more education and training than a high school diploma but less than a four-year college degree. These jobs are very skilled and important, and we need more Iowans to fill this gap so that the industries, and the state, can be supported by workers while reciprocally the workers can be supported by the jobs providing a high quality of life. Why is there a gap? Employers identify a lack of applicants in general and also a lack of applicants with the appropriate training and education. Iowa workforce needs are changing, and we can strengthen Iowa's workforce through education, training, apprenticeships.
Pow I-80 also attended the Future Ready Iowa Regional Summit in Pella this month. Future Ready Iowa is designed to insure that 70 percent of Iowa's workforce has education or training by 2025. Connecting with individuals with barriers to employment and training, collaborating in communities, and working together to find local solutions to local needs are all ways to help iowans be prepared for new workforce demands. | |
